At the morning briefing, Tommy spewed out details about rescuing Travis Bristol from the clutches of the Sunnyside Sons in Houston and the day shift gave him their full attention.

“Travis gonna be safe at home?” asked Art. “Those fuckers went to his house to take his dogs. It’s not like they don’t know where he lives if they want payback.”

Blaine shrugged. “Not our problem. Travis is a felon and he’s going to trial if he lives that long. He’s lucky he has friends like Rob and Perry who care about keeping him alive. Not our job anymore.”

“Too bad,” said Chaney. “Can’t picture him doing the things he’s accused of.”

“Maybe his lawyer will request a psych eval,” said Blaine. “That would be the smart way to go.”

“That’s the only explanation,” said Chaney. “From the upstanding guy we worked with—after his undercover op with the Black Breed ended, he must have slipped a cog.”

“Could be,” said Blaine. “He put his heart and soul into that op. Maybe he lost a little of himself.” He tapped his Sharpie on his yellow pad. “Let’s move on.”

“What’s next boss?” asked Fletch. “Anything new?”

“Yep, this is new.” Blaine pointed across the table at Liam. “Liam is back to work and he’ll partner with Slater. Misty and Casey have a case from Missing Persons and the rest of us will be working on this problem the Chief gave us.”

“Lay it down, boss,” said Cody. “We need a new case.”

“There have been reports of young girls being snatched from gas stations when they pull in to fill up or to run into the convenience store. According to video surveillance in three of the incidents reported to Austin PD, a four man team is lying in wait. When a girl they want comes for gas, they surround her car and take her. It happens in a few seconds, they scoop the girl and they’re gone.”

“What do the guys look like?” asked Fletcher. “Any pictures?”

“Lil has eight by tens, but they’re in black and white and taken from video cam footage none of the shots are too clear.”

Lil passed the photographs around.

“About all you can see is what they’re wearing. Hoodies, jeans, trainers. Nothing that all guys that age aren’t wearing. The guys don’t stand out and that’s the point. They blend and nobody remembers them.”

“What are they driving, boss?” asked Art. “We get any tags?”

“No tags. So far all the suspect vehicles have been white or light colored vans with mud covered plates. Plain vans—no markings, names or pictures on the vans.”

“How we gonna nab the fuckers, boss?” asked Tommy. “Any hints?”

“No hints,” said Blaine, “and there is no way in hell we can watch hundreds of gas stations all over the city at the same time. What we’re going to do is play the odds. We’ll begin with the service centers closest to the U. I picked out the first four and figure those might be prime spots for young girls gassing up.”

He pointed at Lil.
